On community building, conflict and artistic research.<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this lecture, artist and academic I\u015f\u0131l E\u011frikavuk will speak about her recent book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bookspeopleplaces.com\/publishing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Global Protests Through Art &#8211; collaboration, co-creation, interconnectedness <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, co- published in 2024 by UdK Berlin and Books People Places. Inspired by the Gezi Park Protests that started in Istanbul, Turkey in 2013, E\u011frikavuk points to certain intersections between the changing language of protest movements and her ongoing research of community arts. She will also speak about her ongoing project at the UdK, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.isilegrikavuk.work\/theothergarden\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the other garden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an artistic research project she is co-running with her students on ecology, inclusivity and care work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the Playground, 7-8.30pm on the 29th of January.<\/p>\n<p>Free event. She received her MFA from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_School_of_the_Art_Institute_of_Chicago\">The School of the Art Institute of Chicago<\/a>\u00a0(SAIC) and a Ph.D. in Communication from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Istanbul_Bilgi_University\">Istanbul Bilgi University<\/a>, Istanbul, Turkey. E\u011frikavuk worked as a faculty member at Berlin University of Arts (UdK), Media and Communication Department between 2017-2024. Currently she is a Postdoctoral Researcher at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaldisconnect.org\/\">K\u00e4te Hamburger Research Center\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaldisconnect.org\/\">global dis:connect at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>E\u011frikavuk&#8217;s work utilizes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Storytelling\">storytelling<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Journalism\">journalism<\/a>\u00a0and dialogue-based practices and examines critical themes including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protest\">protest,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Feminism\">feminism<\/a>, identity politics, nature, and universal interconnectedness. These works take the form of temporary and permanent installations, interactive events and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Performance_art\">performances<\/a>, photographic and video documentation, and text-based work.<\/p>\n<p>She earned her PhD degree in 2021 from Istanbul Bilgi University, with her thesis titled &#8220;From A Political Protest To An Art Exhibition: Building Interconnectedness Through Dialogue-Based Art&#8221;. In 2024, she published her research as book, titled :\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bookspeopleplaces.com\/publishing\">Global Protests Through Art &#8211;\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bookspeopleplaces.com\/publishing\">collaboration, co-creation, interconnectedness\u00a0<\/a>, co- published by UdK Berlin and Books People Places.<\/p>\n<p>E\u011frikavuk is the co-winner of Turkey\u2019s first contemporary art prize, Full Art Prize in 2012. She is also awarded for 2022 Borderless Book Fund for publishing her PhD research. E\u011frikavuk has participated in numerous international exhibitions, residencies, and her work has been published in both local and international journals.
